About this product:

The Zétoiles espadrille is made with care by a team of enthusiasts concerned with perpetuating the ancestral tradition . All our espadrilles are made in our small workshop located on the heights of Mauléon , capital of Soule in the Basque Country, respecting the know-how of yesteryear.

We have the deep conviction to preserve , enhance and pass on to future generations the tricks of making the real espadrille and thus participate at our level in the local economy .

The Zétoiles espadrille is stamped MAULEON on each of your soles, a guarantee of respect and our unique know-how . The MAULEON label confers that all the manufacturing processes are carried out only in our factory in the Basque Country.

The typical espadrille of the Basque Country is made from only three natural raw materials: jute and latex for the sole and cotton for the canvas. Note that originally, the espadrille was composed of a braided hemp sole and generally linen covered the top of the sandal. This is why at Zétoiles, we have chosen to go back to basics by manufacturing espadrilles in  hemp and French linen , noble materials used in the past.

The sole

The braider uses spools of jute or hemp and linen thread to weave the braid used to make the sole. This braid is then rolled up very skillfully on a small wooden plate which turns on a pivot around small nails arranged more or less far from the central axis according to the desired size. This operation is called molding . The sole is then compressed and compacted before being sewn.

The millet , a hand-fed sewing machine, consists of large awls to pierce the sole across its width as well as a long needle that sews stitch after stitch. The sole then obtains all its solidity. The final stage of the sole is vulcanization . Rubber balls are heated to high temperature and pressed together with the sole for 10 minutes. Pressure combined with heat makes the espadrille totally flexible.

The Web

The fabric is cut with a band saw or a cookie cutter depending on the model. Two cuts are made to obtain the front stem and the rear stem. These are then assembled and sewn by hand on the sole by our seamstresses, who are experts in the field. Hand sewing is a guarantee of nobility and robustness.
